Daniel Brinsmead

Daniel Brinsmead lives and works on the north coast of NSW, Australia. Since completing his studies in 2005, he has dedicated himself to his professional arts practice and life as an artist.

After exhibiting throughout Australia, in both commercial and government institutions, Daniel felt it was time to venture further abroad and seek opportunities in the Asia Pacific region. In 2011 he applied for the RBS-Malihom “Artist in Residency” Program of the Wawasan Open University, Penang, which he was granted. This was six month residency which extended into a longer stay of ten months. One of the resulting outcomes was a body of artwork completed during the residency period at Malihom, and presented in an exhibition at the Royal Bank of Scotland Gallery, Beach Street, Georgetown.

From an ongoing interest in Asean cultures and the creative energies it inspires, Daniel now returns to Penang each year for 6 to 8 months to work on new art projects, painting, exhibiting, and collaborating with local artist and communities. His latest projects are touring to various locations which include Penang during the George Town Festival, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. For the rest of the year Daniel works from his studio and home in the hills of Burringbar, close to the surf beaches of the Tweed and Byron coasts, creating artworks for Retrospect Galleries in Australia. When he is not painting or working a new art project, he is found surfing or road trip…somewhere.

My work examines human nature in relation to contemporary culture. I like to question the way we think, feel, behave and react to our social and physical environments. My work also refers to historical events, nostalgic moments from the past, and icons of significance from various cultures I travel, work and live in.

I am also inspired by the way children approach art. It is direct and honest, an immediate interpretation of life as they know it. My personal search within myself as an artist and how I want to express my creativity has taken me to a kind of simple and direct way of being in my art. I am constantly looking for the way to paint and work where I am energized and excited by what I am doing. I then take this simplicity and combine it with the knowledge and perspective of an adult. The diversity in various cultures I experience at each place I live and work, add an extra dimension to this exploration.
