Alex Louisa

Alex Louisa is a Brisbane artist. After selling out at her first appearance at the Asia Contemporary Art Show in Hong Kong last year with Retrospect Galleries, Alex’s work is now being exhibited throughout Europe, Asia and Australia.

Recently a finalist in the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize, she is endlessly inspired by the intricacies of nature, encouraging the viewer to find the fascination in those pieces most often overlooked. She is also exploring both figurative and landscape works, constantly challenging herself with new subject matter . She creates highly detailed pieces, treating PanPastels like oil paints while experimenting with textural and graphic backgrounds, and is currently working on her largest pieces to date.

Alex’s work has appeared in numerous shows since 2007, she has been published in the Curvy and Semi-Permanent books, and her work is held in private collections in Hong Kong, USA and throughout Australia.

She grabs every moment she can to create her pieces, throwing herself into her artwork when her young twin boys are asleep.

I have always been a nature lover, but over the years, I’ve found myself being drawn more towards the items that would more often be overlooked – the items that are not considered traditionally beautiful.

l am far more fascinated by the intricacies of a dried up seedpod, than the original flower, or by the curled brown leaves on the ground that would otherwise be trodden upon, rather than the glossy green leaves that are still on the tree. I can study each and every piece of a scattered bird skeleton, for just as long as I’ll gaze at a live bird sitting on a branch. The ruffled feathers on the belly of a bird that lies still on the ground, are just as stunning as the feathers on a bird that flies overhead. And it will be clear from my work that a bird in any form can steal my heart.

After recently falling in love with PanPastels, I am using this medium to share and highlight these items that are more often discarded or overlooked, to illustrate the intricate and delicate beauty in all levels of nature.

Alex Louisa I initially tried really hard not to be an artist. I think I listened a little too much to the high school teacher who told me “You’ve always gotta have a plan B” rather than the one who said “If you don’t become an artist I don’t know what I’ll do.” So I […]

January 2015 Featured Artist | Alex Louisa | Trekell Fine Art Supplies

As is so often the case, I’ve loved creating artwork since very young age. As an only child it was easy to lose hours drawing and making. I’ve been exhibiting since 2007, and have been concentrating on my art full time since 2012 after being a Graphic Artist for 8 years as a day job. […]
