Bio

Spanish/Australian artist Alberto Sanchez is a photographer and multi-media artist based in Byron Bay, Australia. Sanchez has pushed the medium of photography, developing a unique hand-colouring technique that enables him to create imagined scenarios from everyday moments. This heavy use of hand-colouring and texture results in a conceptual masquerade and ultimately creates an improbable landscape, in which us, the audience, are invited to participate in the struggle of modern life. The images fluctuate between the narrative to the matter-of-fact photographic record, resulting in a hybrid reality, of physical and imagined worlds.

Alberto conceives photography as a creative art form that is not constricted to the digital medium, where he prints, hacks and re-invents his own photographs to give them an idiosyncratic flavour. He sees photography as a kind of time traveling experience, a mixture of magic realism, which enables him to rediscover the world through his viewfinder. His body of work explores the notions of urban expansionism, capitalism and how individuals define themselves in this overloaded environment.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I was brought up in a small town in Castilla (Spain), an area surrounded by medieval castles, Roman aqueducts and Gothic cathedrals, nurtured ancestral lands, celebrated culture and traditions that are still very much anchored in old Roman hierarchical structures. Since moving to Australia, almost 10 years ago, I have been able to reflect, from the safety of distance, as to how our identity is defined by place and time and who we are in an ever changing world.

As a product of the 21st century, our cities have been overtaken by the ever expanding commercial needs of a capitalistic culture and the resulting human struggle to reclaim space. I am very interested in exploring the interaction between citizens and their urban landscapes. This series of work was taken mostly around Bangkok and Tokyo, chosen for their intensity, conglomeration and pace. I have explored the scale of the unassuming human in relation to the super-sized billboards that encroach upon the busy streets, and the modern rituals of everyday life in commercial centres. The hyper-expansionism in these cities represent the best and worst of modern Asian urbanisation and consumption and the impacting result of on human life.

My intention is simple: to alter our perception of the modern urban landscape. Very much like a graffiti artist would tag a train or a company would place a billboard with the latest iGadget, I have manipulated and intervened with these photographs. And by intervention, I mean painted, scratched and altered by means of physical action and free hand graffiti, creating a unique piece with each work .

In a simple and spontaneous manner, I pervert those photographs not just as a means of rebellion but also to re-arrange the message. As a result of this intervention, my characters are set free to teem and detach themselves from the restraints of the matter-of-fact and indulge in a limbo, deluded parallel reality.

Alberto Sanchez Reinvents the Wheel

You know his signature rainbow kaleidoscopes of colour, layered over the obscured black and white photograph of the metropolis you call home.  Sometimes over two metres long, Alberto’s gargantuan panoramas are often found at the heart of our exhibitions. This year, Alberto created Valiente Alegria – The Installation, completely redefining the designs we envision when we hear […]

Photography fast forwards to past | Alberto Sanchez | The Northern Star 2012

SINCE the development of photography, the notion of ‘capturing light’ has fascinated artists, scientists and writers. The capacity to ‘capture’ an environment also introduced the need for precision instruments and objects such as glass, silver plates, lenses, prisms and of course cameras into our technological culture.
