Our talented artist Kathrin Longhurst and her oil paintings of beautiful, battle-hardened women have been celebrated in a recent edition of Art Edit magazine. We at Retrospect Galleries have been front row watching Kathrin refine her talent and definitely think it warranted the seven page Art Edit spread.

The article discusses the nostalgic content of Kathrin’s artwork, who grew up in communist East Germany. Helplessness and weakness have no place in her art; no, tough female comrades take centre stage while the traditional male hero is cast aside.

In the media today we are met with the news that female British MP Jo Cox has been killed on the streets of Britain. Perhaps the Art Edit article on Kathrin comes at a time when we do need to be stronger, and more united against the hatred that plagues our world of late. It could be asked whether the artwork is nostalgic or not, for it could be interpreted as a call for future strength.

In truth, Kathrin’s artwork mocks the glorification of war and finds satire in the seriousness of it. What a joy it is for us to represent such a brilliant woman with a fierce story and a dramatic talent for retelling it.
